Throughout today’s society, we are living in a technology driven modern era where human culture, regardless of whether we are noticing it or not, is being influenced and dominated by a significant amount of art and media movements. These movements are contributing to the way that we as a global entity think, feel, interact and respond.
Marshall McLuhan refers to the “Global Village” and defines it as ‘members of nations being connected by communication.’ An example of a movement which has contributed to the formation of a global village is the ever-growing TV and film industry, due to the diversity and range of films that are being created and broadcasted all around the world, meaning that different cultures can come together and blend over a common interest. The Hollywood film industry in particular has always had a dominant presence in the worldwide film industry, and this has then resulted in cultures outside of the Western lifestyle perceiving American culture in a particular way. In fact, it is often argued that Hollywood plays an extremely significant role in the development of ‘global uniformity’ by instilling the Western values and ways of life into different cultures around the world. This can include; fashion, food, music, and even the way that people are now communicating. According to Hatchen & Scotton, (2002), “Many critics have described the
process of globalisation as both trendy and controversial; they see the world
as subjugated by American or Western ideals, demonstrated through pop-culture
and the dominance of Hollywood productions” In stating this, Hatchen & Scotton are arguing that the dominance of Hollywood throughout the entertainment industry has resulted in the film industry being 'conquered' by the presence of Hollywood, and that these mediums are allowing America the power to 'push' audiences towards absorbing the prescribed content presented to them devoid of question.

I think it's incredible and perhaps a little scary exactly how much of our lives are influenced by these Hollywood ideologies. The Western world (basically America) has so much influence and power when presented through mediums such as film because we seem to absorb it so easily. I would have to say, however, that I don't believe that this ever-growing Hollywood industry is pushing us towards the "Global Village", when it seems to be primarily pushing us towards Americanization. "Global Uniformity" and "Global society" to me should reflect a mix of the cultures already in existence, not their conforming state. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree when you say that the Hollywood film industry “has then resulted in cultures outside of the Western lifestyle perceiving American culture in a certain way”. The way I see Hollywood is based on what I have seen in movies, which in all reality isn’t what it is like at all to some extent and I think it is very important that this is pointed out.
It is true that due to globalisation productions can now be viewed worldwide, but keep in mind that there is still that delay. For example at movie theatres, movies can come out up to a month earlier in America then here in Australia. If globalisation keeps increasing, this gap could become even smaller which is something to think about.
You have made some strong arguments and used reliable sources to back it up. There is no way to argue with you that films influence the way we see cultures because they do a tremendous amount and I think you have been successful in getting your opinion across.
Good luck with your blog.
Hollywood and the American film industry not only results in the permeation of American culture and values into non-American societies, but through its representation of other cultures actively shapes how we view not just America but also other societies. For example, how many conventional American action films portray the ‘villain’ as a foreigner? Likewise, how much of an impact has Hollywood had on the creation and naturalization of cultural stereotypes? Its incredible, and more than a little worrying, to think that a large proportion of how we view the world and other cultures has been determined not by the news and our own personal experiences, but by the decisions made by Hollywood directors.
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI thought it was an interesting point that internationally, America has an incredible influence on society through its incredible link to all media forms around the world. As you said, the promotion of America and their supremacy has been made possible through mediums such as film, influencing all areas of society including beliefs, ideologies and even fashion. Throughout your post you have clearly referenced well, promoting the validity of your argument. Your added picture was clever, and relevant to your points of the money making industry in Hollywood. Clearly written and easy to follow.
